Churchill’s Angels

5 out of 5 stars - from LoveABook

First in a series. Looking forward to the next!

This is the first in a series of novels about four female friends during World War Two. Daisy, the heroine of the first novel, lives with her parents above a grocer's shop in Dartford - right in the flight path of the German bombers. She is an accomplished mechanic, having been taught by her brothers to maintain the shop's van. However, one of the unintended consequences of the War is that it allows her - along with many other women - to fulfil an ambition that would otherwise be beyond her (but I won't say what for fear of spoiling the story!) Daisy is such an attractive character that it's easy to find yourself rooting for her all the way. However, it's the meticulous historical research that really brings this book to life - not just concerning the domestic details of Daisy's life but also the ways in which the war effort was mobilised in a multiplicity of ways. There are also some very touching passages on the impact of the war - both large and small - on civilian life. Ruby Jackson really knows how to write a page turner and I am looking forward to finding out more about Grace, Daisy's friend, who is to feature in the second of the series. Lastly, to all TV producers out there, this series would be a natural for the small screen.
